Lot 926
1859 Indian Head Cent. . Snow-3. PCGS graded MS-65. A favorite one-year type coin and a scarce variety with the 18 strongly repunched to the south. This is listed in Richard Snow's Flying Eagle and Indian Cent Attribution Guide 1859-1869 as the finest known. The fields are slightly prooflike and the devices very frosty. The details are razor sharp. This is a very attractive example and worthy of a strong bid. Pop 117; 15 finer in 66. (PCGS # 2052) .

1860 Indian Head Cent. Pointed bust. PCGS graded MS-64. The 1860 Pointed Bust or "Type of 1859" was virtually unknown until 1987 when Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of U.S and Colonial Coinage listed it as a very rare variety. Although far from rare, it is available enough to become an accepted part of the regular Indian Cent collection. About 1 in 40 examples of 1860 Indian Cents are found with this feature and as such it is always in demand.

The present example is fully struck with great luster. Only a small spot and a tiny contact mark on the reverse keeps it from a higher grade. In fact, at first glance this looks like a gem. Pop 46; 30 finer; 25 in 65; 4 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 2056) .

1861 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded MS-66. Boldly struck with nice light toning. The smooth-tan surfaces are radiant from rim to rim with no carbon to report. Sharply struck and fully lustrous, both sides possess eye appeal to spare, an indication of methodical precision throughout and seldom seen on the 1861 issue. This has the lowest mintage among the copper-nickel dates, 1859-64. Pop 35; 1 in 66 Star; 2 in 67.

1863 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. A uniform golden-sunset in color. Exquisite, admirable surfaces are boldly contrasted between satiny devices and mirror-finish fields. With a razor-sharp strike and warm, pinkish-tan color, this Gem comes highly recommended for the quality-conscious buyer.

Along with the 1862, the 1863 is the most frequently encountered Proof in the short-lived copper-nickel, oak wreath and shield Indian cent series of 1860-1864. This results in unflagging demand for surviving examples among type collectors, and the Proof 1863 a long tradition as a strong performer in the numismatic market.

The Cent type produced from 1860 through early 1864 is distinguished from its counterparts in the Indian series by an oak wreath with shield reverse motif coupled with a composition of 88% copper, 12% nickel. Proofs of this type were struck all years from 1860 through 1864, and examples are generally obtainable in most grades. At the finest levels of preservation, however, and particularly when linked with a Cameo or Deep Cameo designation, proof Copper-Nickel Cents are conditionally scarce (if not rare) coins that represent important buying opportunities when they appear in the market. Only 460 proofs struck. Pop 5; 2 finer in 67. (PCGS # 2262) .

Lot 934
1863 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-66. In the darkest days of the Civil War, all Federal coins were hoarded and exchanged only at a premium. There was no real benefit to hoarding the nickel cents except that they were hard money issued by the Government. The Mint thought that the situation would ease by just cranking out as many cents as possible. As a result the cents of 1863 are the most common of the era.

Curiously, this date is also one of the toughest in very high grade. This was discovered only with the advent of certified grading and the population reports. PCGS lists only 25 pieces graded at this level and none higher!

The present piece is well struck with very few marks. Pop 27; None finer and PCGS. (PCGS # 2067) .

1864 Indian Head Cent. Copper-nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. By the 3rd year of the Civil War private copper tokens had replaced all copper-nickel cents in the major cities. Mint Director James Pollock determined that the Mint should be the supplier of all coins and that the use of private tokens in circulation would eventually hurt the holders of them. A proposed coinage Bill which would stop the use of the tokens and create a bronze cent similar to the tokens was sitting on Treasury Secretary Chase's desk since 1863 with no action. Political pressure by former Mint Director Snowden and industrialist Joseph Wharton threatened to derail the proposal by substituting the current nickel cent with a thinner version. Chase favored the bronze cent Bill and submitted it to Congress who passed it just ahead of the mounting pressure from Wharton.

The mintage of the copper-nickel cent of 1864 is much less than previous years. In top grade it is one of the toughest of the nickel cents. The Chiro example is fully struck with hardly a mark visible. There are a few trivial specks here and there, but none are outwardly distracting. Pop 85; 10 finer; 98 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 2070) .

Lot 936
1864 Indian Head Cent. Bronze. . No L. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. This is the first issue of bronze cents, which continued mostly unchanged for the next 118 years. Its creation was born out of economic necessity as the nickel cents were not circulating and cheap private token were. It was now realized that the Government stamp and not the metal value is what made a coin like the cent circulate widely. The dies used to strike these were left over from the copper-nickel mintage and as such are usually found with heavy die wear and clash marks.

This is a superb example of this one-year type. The strike is very bold with very lustrous surfaces. A few trivial flyspecks are visible but these hardly detract from the overall beauty of this coin.

The dies show heavy die clashing, which is interesting and does not limit the grade. The top of the wreath and shield from the reverse die can be see impressed into the obverse die by the date. The corresponding reverse clash shows the base of the neck of the portrait in the upper portion of the wreath on the reverse. Pop 103; 37 finer; 30 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 2078) .

Lot 938
1864 Indian Head Cent. Bronze, with "L". . Snow-10. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. Although a new design was not requested with the changeover to the bronze planchet, Longacre took it upon himself to sharpen the dies anyway. Along with the sharper feather detail and a narrower bust point, Longacre added a tiny initial "L" positioned sideways on the ribbon behind Liberty's neck. These dies were made to augment the leftover dies from the copper-nickel production and were used side by side with them during the striking of the bronze cents. Only about 40 obverse dies were needed, and this is a very small number when you compare it to the estimated 300 dies used to strike the copper-nickel and bronze No L coins. The reverse dies were not modified.

Collectors of the day were not so interested in cents from circulation. They were also not so finely attuned to the difference in the design until much later. It is unknown when the collecting community first made note of the difference in the design. By 1870 it was described as the "thin die" in auction catalogs (Longacre's estate sale that year contained two Proof issues described that way.) As collectors of the time were mostly interested in the Proof issues, the low mintage 1864 With L mostly survived in high grade by chance.

The Chiro coin is a wonderful survivor from those times. This piece is fully struck and exhibits chisel sharp details. Minor clashing is seen on the top of the obverse. It is also a bold repunched date, with the 86 showing repunching to the southwest. It is moderately scarce and probably the finest example of this variety extant.

The color is a bright gold with no specs of any significance. A small contact mark on the reverse to the left of the O in ONE is all that keeps this beautiful piece from a higher grade. Pop 35; 3 finer in 66. (PCGS # 2081) .

1864 Indian Head Cent. Bronze, with "L". NGC graded MS-64 Brown. Well struck with traces of mint red. A resplendent tawny dark brown to faded red specimen with increasingly deep carmine overtones in the field. Among the choicer 1864-L cents available today, and a solid MS64 made with obvious controlled precision throughout the key design areas such as the ribbon band with LIBERTY, the feathers (each with full sharp vanes), and not overlooking either a crisp, clear wreath on the reverse. 1865 Indian Head Cent. Plain 5. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. This is a well struck example of this final Civil War date. The date is the Plain 5 style, which is slightly scarcer than the Fancy 5 logotype. The color is a moderately bright gold. There is a small contact mark to the right of the date and a tiny speck by the A in AMERICA.

This date is common in average grades due to its high mintage, but gem full red examples are very difficult to locate. A quick look at the PCGS population shows it to be scarcer in this grade than much overall scarcer dates. Only 10 examples are presently graded with 2 higher. Granted, PCGS did not always denote the different logotypes on their holders so some of the 40 pieces listed under the 1865 Fancy 5 may be Plain 5 pieces. Still it is in fact a very difficult coin to locate. Pop 10; 2 finer in 66. (PCGS # 92084) .

1866 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. The very challenging "Reconstruction Era" set 1866-1877 contains most of the scarcer dates of the Indian Cent series. Mintages declined due to the economy rebounding after the war (in the North at least). Nickel cents returned to circulation and new five cent and three cent nickel coinages lessened demand for cents. Pop 50; 1 finer in 66.

1867 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. This is another very challenging date and is very similar in rarity to the 1866. This example is a bright gold with areas of a deeper golden color. It is difficult to find any marks on this coin, and for a MS64 grade that is unusual. There are numerous die polishing marks and clash marks, which may be confused with grade limiting marks, but as these do not effect the grade negatively, one must wonder why the MS64 was given. There is a scattering of very minute flyspecks on the reverse, but these are visible only under strong magnification. This is a super example for the date and a worthy coin for the finest Indian Cent collections. Pop 63; 19 finer; 18 in 65; 1 in 66. (PCGS # 2090) .

Lot 947
1869/9 Indian Head Cent. . Snow-3. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. The 1869/69 is a repunched date that has caught the fancy of general collectors as one of the few repunched dates to be included in the regular date set. This passion comes from the listing of this, or a similar variety, as an 1869/8 overdate in the catalogs of the early 1960's. In the late 1970's Thomas K. DeLorey, then an authenticator working for The American Numismatic Association, published evidence that the variety was not an overdate. The smoking gun was the difference in the date punch styles for 1868 and 1869. It took over 10 years of pushing by Tom for the listing to change in the Red Book and in the bookshelf albums which collectors popularly use to house circulated sets.

The label has changed now, but the variety is firmly fixed in the basic set of Indian Cents. It is widely sought after. PCGS now labels the variety, although it has not yet done so yet on the present coin.
This is a real spectacular example of this prized variety. It is nearly full red with no real marks of any significance. The strike is full and the coin is very lustrous. Pop 81; 4 finer in 66. (PCGS # 2095) .

1873 Indian Head Cent. Closed 3. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. This coin is nearly full red and very mark free. Although it appears to be fully struck, there is a slight lack of detail on the reverse wreath, probably due to some liquid filling the dies. No real detail is missing and this observation shouldn't hold back any desirability of this wonderful coin. A few very light flyspecks are seen by the last two feathers. Pop 20; none finer at PCGS in Red Brown.

The Closed 3 dies were the first dies made early in 1873. It was A.L. Snowden, the Chief Coiner who noticed that the 3 on all denominations looked like 8's. He had the 3 in the date punches opened slightly on the remaining dies to be produced. It is unknown how many Closed 3 obverse dies were made, but the number is probably in the order of 10 to 15. Among that number are two doubled dies and the Proof die.

The Closed 3 is about 4 times rarer than the Open 3. The estimated mintage is about ½ that either the 1871 or 1872 dates (PCGS # 2110) .

1873 Indian Head Cent. Doubled "LIBERTY". PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. The King of the Indian Cents! This is the coveted Doubled LIBERTY and a top quality one at that! The obverse is bold and full while the reverse shows a slight lack of detail on the outer leaves of the right wreath only. This is not due to a weak strike, but to some debris on the planchet during striking. Regardless, it is full where it counts and the definition of the doubling is one of the best we have seen on this variety.

The obverse is mostly brown and gold with tinges of purple in the southwest quadrant. There is hardly a mark. The reverse is mostly brown as well. The feather detail and the LLIBBEERRTTYY is chisel sharp.
This variety was not discovered, until 1959, a few years after the 1955 doubled die Lincoln cent became known. The popularizing of doubled die varieties developed in the early 1960's and today doubled dies are avidly collected by many mainstream collectors. The 1873 Doubled LIBERTY is one of the top doubled die, one that elicits a WOW from most collectors the first time they see it.

The rarity of this variety is well known. Only 2 are graded MS65RB by PCGS and a single NGC example. Of the 10 coins graded by PCGS in the MS64 grade, some are simply problem pieces, which have a tendency to lower the price perception when they come up for sale at auction. Although graded BN, this coin is one of the top examples of this variety available in any grade! This coin has everything expected for the grade and is worthy of a very strong bid. This is one of the highlights of the Chiro Collection. Pop 4; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 2115) .

1877 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. This is the key date in the series and seems to be on everyone's wish list. This example is fully struck with the only mentionable mark hidden in the field between the IC and the last two feathers. The color is nearly full red on the obverse with a slightly more muted reverse. Coins of this caliber show up only once or twice a year and when they do they bring lots of bidding activity. I expect this coin to be hotly contested.

The rarity of the 1877 Indian cent is seemingly a bit underestimated by the mintage figure of 852,500. Rick Snow points out in his new book A Guide Book to Flying Eagle and Indian Cents, that only 2 obverse dies and one reverse die is known for the circulation strike 1877. With an estimated striking limit of 200,000 coins per die, the number of different die pairs of 1877 Indian Cents should be much higher than what we see. Also, the dies did not appreciably deteriorate much more than what is seen on the present example - a few die cracks here and there. The conclusion that Snow draws is that far, far fewer 1877 Indian cent were made than actually reported. Pop 41; 3 finer in 66. (PCGS # 2128) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,500.

Lot 964
1878 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. This is a fully struck example of this moderately tough date. The surfaces are free of any distracting marks and it had a beautiful satiny luster. There is a reverse die break, known as a retained cud, where the die has broken and slips farther into the die chamber than the rest of the die face. The planchet metal fills the void. As a variety it is exciting and to the right buyer worthy of a premium. To the average collector it is interesting, but maybe not worth a premium. It is a Mint-made anomaly so it does not detract at all from the grade and desirability.

This is the beginning of "The Gilded Age" collection 1878-1909, taken from Mark Twain's 1873 novel of the same name. The Indian Cents of this era are more uniform and struck in higher quantities. Planchets were supplied from outside the Mint starting this year and quality improved there too. Pop 45; 13 finer; 12 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 2132) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

1882 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-66 Red. This is an outstanding example of an Indian Cent. The strike is full and the luster just drips off the coin.
